• Pass emissions first when your area requires it — failed tests kill deals
• Keep the pass paperwork ready (recent pass = stronger proof of compliance)
• Confirm whether your county actually requires testing
• Clear check-engine lights before testing — they are usually an automatic fail

Regional patterns

California

Among the strictest standards nationwide (CARB). Biennial testing is common for many vehicles, with newer-vehicle grace periods depending on model year rules.

Northeast

Annual testing is common in several states and is often bundled with safety inspection programs.

Southwest and other metros

Testing is frequently limited to metro counties. Rural counties are often exempt even when the state runs an emissions program elsewhere.
